The First Tablet
1. He possessed intelligence . . . ,
2. His command like the command of Anu …
3. He (Ea) granted him a wide ear to reveal the destiny of the land,
4. He granted him wisdom, but he did not grant him eternal life.
5. In those davs, in those years the wise man of Eridu,
6. Ea had created him as chief among men,
7. A wise man whose command none should oppose,
8. The prudent, the most wise among the Anunnaki was he,
9. Blameless, of clean hands, anointed, observer of the divine statutes,
10. With the bakers he made bread
11. With the bakers of Eridu, he made bread,
12. The food and the water for Eridu he made daily,
13. With his clean hands he prepared the table,
14. And without him the table was not cleared.
15. The ship he steered, fishing and hunting for Eridu he did.
16. Then Adapa of Eridu
17. While Ea, … in the chamber, upon the bed.
18. Daily the closing of Eridu he attended to.
19. Upon the pure dam, the new moon dam) he embarked upon the ship,
20. The wind blew and his ship departed, With the oar, be steered his ship Upon the broad sea . . .
The Second Tablet
1. …
2. The south wind …. when
3. He had driven me to the house of my lord, I said,
4. O South wind, on the way I shall to thee … everything that,
5. Thy wing, will I break.” As be spoke with his mouth,
6. The wing of the South wind was broken, seven davs
7. The South wind blew not upon the land. Anu
8. Called to his messenger Ilabrat:
9. Why has the South wind not blown upon the land for seven davs?
10. His messenger Ilabrat answered him: “My lord,
11. Adapa, the son of Ea, the wing of the South wind
12. Has broken.”
13. When Anu heard these words
14. He cried, Help!” He ascended his throne,
15. “Let some one bring him,”
16. Likewise Ea, who knows the heaven. He roused him
17. … he caused him to wear. With a mourning garment
18. He garbed him, and gave him counsel
19. Saying: ” Adapa, before the face of Anu the King thou art to go
20. … to heaven
21. When thou comest up, and when thou approachest the door of Anu,
22. At the door of Anu, Tammuz and Gishzida are standing,
23. “they will see thee, they will ask thee; ‘Sir,’
24. For whose sake dost thou so appear, Adapa? For whom
25. Art thou clad in a mourning garment?’ ‘In our country two gods have vanished, therefore
26. Am I so.’ ‘Who are the two gods, who in the land
27. Have vanished?’ ‘Tammuz and Gishzida.’ They will look at one another and
28. Be astonished. Good words
29. They will speak to Anu. A good countenance of Anu
30. They will show thee. When thou standest before Anu
31. Food of death they will set before thee,
32. Eat not. Water of death they will set before thee,
33. Drink not. Garments they will set before thee,
34. Put them on. Oil they will set before thee, anoint thyself.
35. The counsel that I have given thee, forget not. The words
36. Which I have spoken, hold fast.” The messenger
37. Of Anu came: “Adapa has broken
38. The wing of the South wind. Bring him before me.”
39. The road to Heaven he made him take, and to Heaven he ascended.
40. When he came to Heaven, when he approached the door of Anu,
41. At the door of Ann, Tammuz and Gisbzida are standing.
42. When they saw him, Adapa, they cried: ” Help,
43. Sir, for whom dost thou so appear? Adapa,
44. For whom art thou clad in a mourning garment?”
45. In the country two gods have vanished; therefore am I clad
46. In mourning garments.” “Who are the two gods, who
47. have vanished from the land?”
48. “Tammuz and Gishzida.” They looked at one another and
49. Were astonished. When Adapa before Anu, the King,
50. Drew near, and Anu saw him, he cried:
51. “Come hither, Adapa. Why hast thou broken the wings
52. Of the South wind? ” Adapa answered Ann: ” My lord,
53. For the house of my lord in the midst of the sea,
54. I was catching fish. The sea was like a mirror,
55. The South wind blew, and capsized me.
56. To the house of my lord was I driven. In the anger of my heart,
57. I took heed.” Tammuz and Gishzida
59. Answered … “art thou.” To Anu
60. They speak. He calmed himself, his heart was . . .
61. “Why has Ea revealed to impure mankind
62. The heart of heaven and earth? A heart
63. … has created within him, has made him a name?
64. What can we do with him? Food of life
65. Bring him, that be man, eat.”Food of life
66. They brought him, but he ate not. Water of life

70. Anu looked at him; he wondered at him.
71. “Come, Adapa, why hast thou not eaten, not drunken?
72. Now thou shalt not live.” … men …Ea, my lord
73. Said: “Eat not, drink not.”
74. Take him and bring him back to his earth.

14. A word he spoke to him.
15. “Adapa, before the King Anu thou shalt go
16. Fail not the order, keep my word
17. When thou comest up to heaven, and approachest the door of Anu,
18. Tammuz and Gishzida at the door of Anu are standing.
